We can’t stop pushing the limits, and that is what will break us. Look closely, this is magnificence. Blood mixing with symbolism to paint a picture admired by all. Where’s the fun in sobriety? When you feel the sun creeping onto your skin, but you’re still lost in the haze of the night. Willing yourself further into the darkness. Your breath catching in your lungs— That’s what makes living so entertaining. Covering ourselves in blindfolds until we light the town to see ourselves. It’s a sign of being far gone when your fingers leave trails of fire across my body. This town won’t sleep at night, ru

The Top Reasons for Manuscript Rejection

One of the things that the literary agency I work for does some weekends out of the year is teach seminars on query writing and the first 5 pages of manuscripts (which, basically just means the first page of the manuscript). The seminars last only a day or two, but aim to help writers improve their queries and start of their books so that they have a better chance of standing out in the ever-growing slush pile. Since I know many members of the literature community here aim to one day be published writers, I thought I would share our sheet of the top reasons for manuscript rejections. Please note: These are in no particular order. Wrong genre

The Write Inspiration: 02.22.2016

The Write Inspiration for the week of February 22, 2016 Hello fellow TheWritePlace (https://www.deviantart.com/thewriteplace) members!  We only had one submission last week,     If you wrote a poem or other piece of lit and I did not mention it here, please let me know and it will be added. THIS WEEK'S PROMPT:  Provided by Annthesquirrel (https://www.deviantart.com/annthesquirrel) What time is it? Prompt time! So this week in two of my separate college courses  we've brought up different stories being related; Shaw's Pygmalion and  My Fair Lady. Or, Austen's Emma and Clueless.  I know this squirrel has already thrown mythology and fairy tales at you, but...

This was the introduction of sci-fi elements into fictions that would otherwise be classified as literary realist.

butterflies.

I dreamt about your hands again last night; one sat politely on the edge  of my waist as you pulled me tightly against you,         your fireside warmth   leaving me lightheaded     and breathless for more              of your tender touch-- I woke up with the bitter taste of regret  sitting on my tongue but I brushed my teeth and started my day                  hoping that i’d forget the feeling of your fingers  on my skin but the butterflies that you left     t r e  m b l i  n g in the hollow spaces of               my belly stayed,   even as day turned to     night and I felt the tug of sleep at the corners o

horoscope heart.

Sun in Sagittarius your lips curl like Cupid’s Bow, tongue like an arrowhead, sometimes it would be easier if your aim weren’t so true. Moon in Cancer shorelines make you cry more than sad films, because every shore means a parting, every shore means somewhere else is calling, you will always be the one who leaves first. Ascendant in Leo you love to make an entrance, all grinning teeth and ivory claws, sometimes it is okay to make a quiet exit, when the world thinks itself a lion-tamer, and find a different jungle to call your kingdom.

The desert love.

Dry air, like a dense comb                               running through my thick hair;                                   all is golden, orange, auburn - desert.              I live in the dunes, the craggy rocks                     sand and pebbles, scraggy plant life                          begging for some water and a break.     What parched earth, desperate for life:                                                   what a lie!                     When the sun starts to sink, she breathes                  inhaling as if she were newborn.                             Oh, I long for the ancient
